Personal Stuff - BA papers

Between September 1999 and August 2002 I read English, Politics, Media and Culture at the University of Wolverhampton to earn a Bachelor degree. The full degree title is BA(Hons) English, Politics, Media and Cultural Studies. During this period I produced a number of academic essays on a variety of topics, and a select few are collected below. My thesis was on linguistics using Critical Discourse Analysis, and it has a dedicated site that you can access here.

2001-2002:

Broadcasting in Europe papers

• Regulators, broadcasters, the press and the public, often talk about "quality" in broadcasting but quality is difficult to define. How might we approach this concept when it comes to broadcasting?

Broadcast Journalism papers

• News as show.

Contemporary Political Ideologies papers

• What are the alternatives that Anarchy as an ideology can present to current society? And will these alternatives work?
• A critical assessment of liberalism's distinguishing features and the social factors underlying its emergence and development.

Global Media, Global Culture papers

• The Digital Me - A qualitative examination of the way 'private spheres' are constructed out of the publicly accessible Internet, and the implications of this personalisation on the concept of 'culture'.

Language and Power papers

• Short, contemporary definitions of three words, prefaced by a short introduction.
• In "Our National Language", Thomas Davis (1843) said "To impose another language on a people is to send their history adrift among the accidents of translation." How is this belief reflected in Brian Friel's Translations and to what extent does this view represent an accurate picture of the process of Anglicisation of Ireland?
